The BE Project 2021 – Seth – Beautiful Evolutions Photography

The BE Project – In a world where you can be anything…. what will you be?

Seth… there are so many ways I’m sure you could describe Seth.  Tall is obviously one of them if you have ever met him i person.  However, there really is so much more to him and every time I get the opportunity to visit with him, my heart just gets happier.  He’s always dressed sharp, he has a wonderful smile that makes me smile and he has one of the kindest hearts. Read on to learn a little bit about this guy!

What word did you choose and why?

Seth chose the word Resilient.

“I think it fits me better than ANY other word on the planet. I think it’s perfect because of my ability to bounce back and recover and that is the definition of it.”  Seth has faced a lot and has had a bit of a bumpy road, so I asked how he was today.  “Fantastic!   I chose to change my life and it was the very best thing I ever could have done.”  April 1 will be 2 years since Seth has made life changes.  I asked where he finds his strength to continue down a path of a better life for himself. “It was easier once I got started, every day is challenge, however, I don’t ever want to go back to that place.”

What would you tell Seth as a little boy?

Man, don’t do it, its not cool.

What would you tell Seth 10 years ago?

“It’s a long road.”

What do you hope life looks like in a few years?

“That’s tough because of my dad.  He is deteriorating quickly and it’s tough to think about what life looks like in a few years without him here.  I am lucky that I get to live with him and my mom now – so I get the opportunity to make memories now. If I hadn’t gotten my life turned around, I’m not sure I would have been able to forgive myself for missing out.”

Seth – It is an absolute honor to watch you grow and evolve into the man you are becoming.  I know you have a million people that are cheering you on – but you have one more over here.  I’m blessed that I’ve gotten to photograph you a few times and I get to see a beautiful version of you.  Thank you for being vulnerable and share your heart with me.

What is The BE Project?

Have you ever stopped to think about who or what you want to be?  Most often there is a word that drives you.  If you sit in the silence and really think about what type of person you want to be… there will be a word, sometimes more than one word, that will guide you along and push you to keep being a better version of yourself.  This photo project has become something that has touched my heart and hopefully those that have participated. I chose to shoot all of the images in black and white because I wanted the least amount of distractions.  Just the human and the word.   This project is the stories of some amazing people, their stories, and what these words mean to them.  Some have participated each of the 3 years we have done this, some are new each time.  It’s an amazing honor to follow along in their journey and document who they are becoming.

The BE Project – In a world where you can be anything…. what will you be?

Meet Rachel. Have you ever met someone and just adored their personality from the very beginning?  That is how I feel about this lady.  She’s beautiful, inside and out and I look forward to learning more about her and her story.  I’m thankful she is a client and a friend.

What word did you choose and why?

Rachel chose the word Flourish.

“I think with everything going on – it was important for me to live my best life and not live in fear. Flourish seems to be the word that wraps all of that up – live your life and live in the beauty that comes with it.”

What would you tell Rachel 10 years ago?

“I have changed so much in the past 5-6 years.  10 years ago, that Rachel was a zombie.  I had gotten lost in who I was. I would tell her, take time for yourself and don’t loose yourself.  The turning point for me was my divorce.  It was a super scary time – but I made so many really good friends during that time.  I met the love of my life after that.  My “baby”, who is 20 now, told me that this is the happiest he has ever seen me.  That is important.”

What advice would you give your kids?

“It’s important to try things that scare you.  Some of the things that I’ve done that have been the scariest – have been the most rewarding.  See where those things take you.”

What do you hope life looks like in a few years?

“I want to continue in this happiness, I want to see what else is coming.  I want to continue to grow in my career.”

The BE Project 2021 – Caryl – Beautiful Evolutions Photography

The BE Project – In a world where you can be anything…. what will you be?

Meet Caryl. Caryl is one of the women that helped us start this project.  She is one half of the Woolard’s, the jeweler that created the necklace line.  However, she’s so much more than that.  She’s strong, she’s resilient, she’s a tough cookie…. and this year… she’s going to focus on being more flexible.

What word did you choose and why?

Caryl chose the word Flexible.

“I have spent the last year, focus on being more flexible.. learning how to adapt to anything that comes my way. I don’t want to be reactive to it – I want to just be able to respond to it.  Flexible is kind of a confusing word, it can mean many things.  People often think that you have to be really flexible to do yoga, that’s not really what it means.  Yoga really means more about about becoming flexible with your attitude and being able to adapt to situations. So, I’m not “bodily” flexible.. but in the last year, I’ve become very flexibly mentally.  I think that we should all try to be more flexible so that we can live together in a more grounded fashion and not become so reactive instead of responsible.  Being able to take a moment and let things sink in allows me to handle situations better.”

“For me, I had a complete meltdown over toilet paper not being where it belongs… and that was a turning point for me. I had to sit and cry and the decide – I needed to learn how to be flexible so I could be less reactive.”

What would you tell Caryl two years ago?

“Don’t be so hard on yourself.  Be a little sweeter and more gentle with yourself. Give yourself the space to cry and have all of the feelings.  Surrender to it all. Stop worrying about making things happen, let it happen the way it’s going to happen and just be present in the moments.”

The BE Project 2021 – Riley – Beautiful Evolutions Photography

The BE Project – In a world where you can be anything…. what will you be?

Meet Riley. So, I’ve actually had the honor and privilege to know Riley since she was much younger.  There are a million words analdin that you could use to describe her, but I will tell you that the word she chose for this project… is perfectly suited to her.  She has faced some pretty big challenges head on – and she has shown a lot of people just how strong she is.

What word did you choose and why?

Riley chose the word Strong.

“It’s a good reminder that I always need to live my life as a strong person.  It’s not always going to be easy.  I find my strength from my family and my friends.  My support system.” Over the last month, you had to plan and coordinate the funeral of one of your bonus moms.  It was a pretty big task for someone as young as you are… in the moments when you struggled the most – where did you find your strength?  “I try to remember how I was raised and how I could make those people proud.”

What would you tell the 12 year old Riley?

“Live every day like it’s your last and hug your family.”

What do you want your life to look like in a couple of years?

“Hopefully out of school. Hopefully with a big girl job.  Maybe with my person… in like 5 years.  Settled, working towards success.”

The BE Project 2021 – Kerry – Beautiful Evolutions Photography

The BE Project 2021 – Kerry – Beautiful Evolutions Photography

The BE Project – In a world where you can be anything…. what will you be?

Meet Kerry. She’s got a heart of gold and just recently started treatment for breast cancer.  When she booked her appointment with me, her first question was whether or not she should wear one of her wigs or head wraps… I’ll be really honest – it’s super awesome to embrace your journey and the way your body reacts to it.  So, I opted for the natural beauty that I think she is.

What word did you choose and why?

Kerry chose the word Brave.

“Being brave is not innate to my personality.  As a child, i was extremely shy.  I realized if i wanted to enjoy life, I had to be brave and get out into the world.  I used my faith in God and the love of family and friends.  To this day, with fighting cancer,  I had to go back to being brave. Last week was a rough week for me, on one of the days that I was at my lowest…I received no less than 8 text messages from friends just checking on me.  That is no accident, that came when I needed it the most.  I want other women going thru cancer to know that you have to be brave enough to love yourself, to indulge yourself, to take care of yourself.  Do not get sunk into the depression of cancer.  For me, cancer has been the scariest thing in my life.  It has taken so much from me.  It has taken my health, my sense of wellbeing, my hair, it’s scarred my body.  However, cancer can’t steal your spirit.  It can’t take the love you have from friends and family.  I’ve been so very blessed with the support of everyone.

I decided I wanted my journey to be a story of hope.  99% of healing is attitude.  I’ve decided to keep a smile on my face when I can.  If I decide to be happy and decide to be brave, then that is what I will be. “

Where do you find your strength to continue to be brave?

“I pray. During that prayer I thank God for every good thing in my life.  For me it is my blessings from God: my family, friendships, my precious boxers Halle and Echo, my job, my home, the medical advances that are helping me live through cancer, the simple things like watching the birds preen in my bird bath out the window, watching our kitties play on their cat tree, my pups snuggling with me.  I could go on… but what I want women to know is no matter what you are going through, you have been blessed.  Concentrate on gratitude for what you have been blessed with and you will be lifted out of the pit.  For me the blessings pour in after, like texts and phone calls of encouragement that I told you about the day I fell into that pit.  Those calls weren’t a coincidence – it was a God thing.  We never know why God is putting us through life changing challenges like cancer.  I do know it has happened for a reason.  I will come through a better person who has been shown the power of love, and I am anxious to spread that love to everyone possible. “

What would you tell your grandkids for advice to hold thru their lives?

“Follow and listen to your intuition.  Often, it is the catalyst of divine intervention.  I know that, because when I haven’t listened… It has been a mistake.”

What would you tell the 12 year old Kerry?

“Love yourself. Be Brave.  Being brave is to just do it. Include yourself in the things that you are frightened to do or scared because you’re are worried about people will think of you.  More often than not, you may fail.  But that will teach you to be better at what you want to do.  Trust in God and love yourself.”

The BE Project 2021 – Cindy – Beautiful Evolutions Photography

The BE Project – In a world where you can be anything…. what will you be?

Meet Cindy. She’s been a participant from the beginning.  I’ve been lucky enough to watch her story evolve and watch as she has become the powerful woman she is today.  Read below for more of Cindy’s story and why she chose her word this year.

What word did you choose and why?

Cindy chose the word renewed.  After a crazy year of COVID.  “I kept praying God, give me a word.  I was journaling one day and wrote “I have lost the song I once I had and I want it restored.  In the meantime I had watched a church sermon from 2020 and it was about a revival.  It was amazing and watched it over 3 days. As I was watching this service, the pastor said – maybe your sitting there and you’ve lost the song in your heart. He continued on and said you need that restored.  I was crying and knew that God hears me.  It was in that moment that I knew that “renewed” was the right word.  I have felt such a pressing need to be inward focused.  I am a caretaker by nature and I like the sense of achievement.  2020 really pulled the rug out from under me.  I kept trying to focus on things like a job that made me miserable, getting my hair done every 3 weeks…. now, I have embraced the glorious color, i’ve shed a job that made me feel miserable. I can now focus on the things that are important. I want to remove anything that takes away from just being me.”

The word renewed means: To make like new again, restore to freshness, to make extensive changes.  Do again, resume, replace, replenish.

What would you tell your kids if you could give them words of wisdom in their life.

Do what makes you happy.

What would you tell the 12 year old Justin?

Don’t listen to all the naysayers… God has given you so many gifts. Go use them.
