The Bowman family is FULL of life. They keep me on my toes and I adore them. You have personalities of every degree and they make this little family so perfect. Every year, mom tells me that I’ve got my hands full and that I am brave to deal with her crazy little family. What she doesn’t know is that I adore her family. Their kind of crazy is what makes it so fun every year. I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, we will move fast and furious… and create some beautiful images that tell the story of their family in this moment.
This year, due to sickness and holiday schedules… our holiday family shoot got moved to the beginning of the year. She wanted something that celebrated the new decade. Glitter, Sequins and puppies… all of it.
Family Photography will forever be important to me. To document your family, to tell your story, to be able to look back and see and remember those moments…. it really is something everyone should do. However… it is also important to also not take yourself so seriously and just have fun. Your kids are only this age once. Your family is NOT the definition of perfect. So why not do something a little out of the ordinary.
This momma LOVES Halloween. She had been telling me for years that she wanted her family pictures done in a cemetery. She would ask me occasionally if I thought it was too weird. Honestly, no, not weird at all. I think a cemetery is one of the prettiest places every. Spooky… yes maybe a little. But so pretty.
As luck would have it, our Aesthetician, Jessica, next door is a genius at makeup… so, I proposed something special. A family session that was catered to their little family and it was just perfection. This session turned out SO much better than I dreamed it would. She ordered a 30×40 print to hang in their home this fall and I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE IT!!
We are now booking fall family sessions and only have a handful of dates left for the year
– your session can be a traditional family session… or maybe you have an idea that is unique… let’s chat about it!
This beautiful momma emailed me a couple of months ago to set up a family session. It was going to be a warm day and she wasn’t really certain all the kids would cooperate, so she chose to book a mini session. They had recently blended families and she just wanted some good pictures before the summer was over. After we found a date that would work, we chatted a little bit about the location options – we determined that their home was going to be just perfect – it also gave us a chance to have their dogs in a few of the pictures.
Blended families are not abnormal, however, the way these kids all got along was really special to watch. We spend the evening dancing in the backyard, snuggling up, and just genuinely laughing. It was a magical night and I think we made some magical images that tell the story of their family perfectly!
Thank you Smith Family… it was my honor to be your photographer.
Family photography will always hold a special place in my heart. Over the years, I really haven’t found a good balance of marketing these… because you really have to understand the emotion behind a session for me. I firmly believe that you should have family pictures done often. Too many times, I hear how busy we all say we are. Life is chaotic and things just keep getting in the way. It isn’t until you look back, and realize that you haven’t captured your family in many years and you missed the opportunity to create these memories.
Think about it, how many photos live on your phone? Have you ever printed them? What would happen if your phone crashed or if you lost it? Have you created and printed images that your grandchildren can look back on? One of my very favorite things to do when I was a little girl, was to sit and look at photos that my uncle had kept. Generations of photos. Memories that I only know by the images. What are you leaving your children and grandchildren?
King Family Photography Session
I had the opportunity to sit and talk with Sara King a few months ago. Somehow we got sidetracked onto this conversation and she couldn’t remember how long it had been since she had done family pictures. Her kids… were itty bitty. And now… they are crossing into new chapters of their life. She decided a few weeks later to book a session. As we were planning the details and logistics of her session, she asked if she could bring her parents. OF COURSE! This is what makes my heart happy. When I get the opportunity to meet extended families and document their love and life.
My goal for Sara’s family session was to get them in a natural and comfortable state. To interact and just truly be together. Doing something that wasn’t too out of the box for them. I never want a family session to be so stuffy and formal that everyone feels uncomfortable. I want to know what happens in a normal life for your family and find a location that allows everyone to relax, laugh, and generally, just have a good time. This location was perfect. It gave an adventure, good stories to tell as they look at the images, and a chance to just embrace who their family is today.
When I look at the images from their session… I can feel their love. I can hear their laughter. My heart swells up and tears come to my eyes, because I know how important these images are. I know that for years to come, Sara’s kids will look at these images and see their grandparents and their mom with such love.
I tell everyone all the time… book a family session. Find a photographer that can tell your family’s story. Make sure you have a connection – because when it’s all said and done… the images we create will tell the stories long after your mind no longer can.
Once or twice a year we travel up to the Oklahoma City area to do a round of photo shoots. We have done boudoir, fitness and family while we have been there. A few months ago we headed up there and photographed another beautiful round of women. I was fortunate enough to photograph this super sweet family while we were there.
Shelbie is definitely the queen of her house and her boys know they need to keep momma happy. I had so much fun with them and we spent our time loving and laughing together.
One of my very favorite moments was at the very end. At the end of each family session I always give the kids some time to just be silly. They can make silly faces. They can dance it out. It’s their time to just be. I sent mom and dad off to go get changed back into comfy clothes and I asked Trenton what else he would like to do. He smiled real big and said he wanted to take a picture with me.
You guys… my heart melted. So you bet I flipped that camera around and just didn’t care if it was in focus or not.
As we walked back up to the house, he looked up at me and said “you are the best photographer ever”. Sweetest boy ever!! Thank you Shelbie for asking me to do your family pictures. It was absolutely an honor to document your family.
Tabitha reached out several months ago because she needed to update her family pictures. It had been several years since they had them done… and it was way past time. Tabitha and Dusty have two BEAUTIFUL girls and while it may have taken them a few minutes to get over their stranger danger… they did a fabulous job and we had a lot of fun. Family sessions will always hold a special place in my heart. They are a lot of work for mommas… and dads never really want to be there. The kids have usually been bribed with candy, food, or a special toy. What makes me happy is when it is all said and done, and mom finally gets to see her images, she sees her family in a new light. She sees the giggles, the love, and all the beautiful little pieces of her family. That is what I think a true family session should be like. Tabitha, I hope you cherish these images and put them up everywhere.
Tabitha and Dusty have two absolutely beautiful girls. Lexy is 7 years old. She’s quiet, shy, and takes a little bit to warm up. She is a great big sister and knows just how to help get giggles from her little sis. Lexy took a few minutes to warm up with me. I’ve learned a long time ago, to give them their time and their space. I also happen to know a couple of ways to get them to break out of their little shell a little faster. It didn’t take too long at all and she was smiling at me and having fun. Kelsy is 2 years old. She’s full of energy and raring to go. Kelsy stayed pretty close to her daddy in the beginning… but I realized that she was pretty interested in all of the nature that surrounded us. As soon as we stopped taking pictures after the first few minutes, I let them collect rocks and had them sit down to count them. It was beautiful to watch the girls work together and explore.
Once I was able to get the girls laughing and giggling – we got back to our purpose. I wanted to tell the story of this sweet family. The love you can feel from them is truly beautiful. The girls are at such a sweet age and I could tell at every moment that mom and dad were so proud of their family.
I asked mom what the girls enjoyed doing together and one of the things she mentioned was reading, so I asked her to bring a couple of books. These images just stole my heart. If you look closely – you will see that Kelsy is imitating everything that her big sister was doing, including how she laid beside her. These moments are priceless. These are the moments that I want to capture for parents. They are fleeting and before long these little girls won’t be so little. However, my hope is that they look at these years down the road and can still hear the laughter.
Can’t forget to get a few pictures of mom and dad.
Beautiful Evolutions Family Photographer
This year I changed how we structure our family sessions. I am a big believer in telling stories thru images, but there is something about a family session that I think that holds even more true. Every little detail that I try to capture tells a story. Watching a mom pick and choose which images she will keep honestly just breaks my heart. So going forward, all of our family sessions include the fully gallery that is sent to you. I want each family to see their family the way that I see it. I want the little details to be just as important as the big beautiful picture that goes above the fireplace. Want to see some more of our family life inspired sessions – head over to the Beautiful Evolutions website.
We are now booking Spring Family sessions for April and May – before Texas gets too hot!
