I am lucky enough to travel for some of our sessions… although – truth be told, not nearly as often as I would like. 2018, that’s a goal… travel for more clients. Oklahoma will always have a piece of my heart and we are so lucky that we are brought back to OKC for some clients at least once a year. This time we added a couple of special family sessions on to the end of the day.
Dawn and Big Daddy. He has a name… but we all call him Big Daddy 🙂 Dawn was so excited to have pictures done. She hasn’t ever had pictures before and she knew the importance of them. I think her daughter Brandi may or may not have pushed a little to get them to go ahead and book a session. I’m SO very glad she did. Dawn came over at the end of the day and brought in her options for clothes. She was a little nervous I could tell… but she did a great job hiding it. We chose the outfit that would be best for where we were shooting and I promptly led her over to get started on hair and makeup. She sat down and I could hear her and Lori talking 90 miles an hour. I checked on her a few times, but left Lori to work her magic. Big Daddy waited patiently outside while his love got pampered.
One important thing to know about Big Daddy… he’s the strong silent type – always in overalls. He’s a good ol’ Oklahoma Boy. But my goodness he can clean up when he wants to. He changed into the clothes for the session and I smiled from ear to ear. You see… I’ve NEVER seen Big Daddy in anything other than overalls.
We got started and I gave my usual spiel about how the session would go. The weather was absolutely ridiculously perfect. It was late July for goodness sake and I bet the temperature was in the mid 80s. I couldn’t have been happier as we walked around the property heading to our first little destination.
It was important to me to get some images I knew they would love. Not only had they never had pictures done before…I had a feeling I would be pushing my luck if I thought they would do this very often. Well, I’m pretty stinkin happy to say that they did a fabulous job and I couldn’t be happier with the images we created. I truly hope they cherish this for a lifetime.
All my love Dawn & Big Daddy – thank you for trusting me to be your photographer.
If you have listened to me talk about photography, you will know I am a big advocate for family pictures. I believe you should do family pictures as often as possible. We change so much year to year… our lives evolve and our worlds constantly change. Your pictures… they tell your stories. Not everyone sees the value in having family pictures done, not everyone takes the time to carve out a couple of hours to pull it together to have them done. However, I’ve never had a client do a family session and say “I wish we hadn’t done family pictures”. Never. Ever.
Abbye and I have been talking about doing her family pictures for over a year. The last time that Abbe and her parents had family pictures done was when she was a little girl… for the church directory. I’m certain I cried a little when she told me this. Then I giggled relentlessly when she showed me the picture. I’ll hold on to that for blackmail at a later date. This past weekend we traveled down to Waxahachie, TX to photograph Abbye and her parents. I won’t go into the back story here, but I will say, these pictures are priceless and I think they will be cherished for many many years. I had the privilege to photograph this sweet family of three and give them updated photographs. (seriously, think back to your church directory pictures… go ahead, i’ll wait for you to conjure up that picture).
OK… carrying on. The session was short and sweet, because let’s be real… Texas heat is no joke, even at 9am. However, in a short time frame I was blessed to capture their laughter, their love, and hear a little of her parents story. They have beautiful images to last forever… and I have beautiful stories to inspire me to a lifetime of love.
Abbye’s parents met on a blind date, almost 44 years ago. On the 2nd date, she asked him to marry her. 10 days later… they were married. Nothing fancy, no big to-do. No engagement pictures, maybe not even any actual wedding photos, no big party.
Today… almost 44 years later, they still look at each other like they just met. The love they share and exude is truly breathtaking. I could watch them talk and laugh all day long. He watches over her as her protector and her champion and you can see just how much he adores her each time his eyes find her. She kisses him like they are still teenagers and you can see how safe she feels in his arms.
Thank you Abbye for allowing me to photograph your family. This is exactly my WHY for what I do. I have been able to document 44 years of love between two people, document their love for the beautiful daughter, and document laughter that will triumph over anything life throws their way.
Family Photography Sessions are always refreshing to me. I typically don’t shoot a lot of them during the year, a lot of families wait until the Fall. However, over the last year I’ve been pulled to document families in a very different way. A normal family session is a lot sit there and smile, Mom is panicking because the kids aren’t being perfect. Someone got a grass stain running from the car to me. Dad isn’t too happy to be there… and the kids, well, the kids just want whatever bribe was offered to them on the car ride to where we are meeting. Let me give you a different perspective on family pictures. Allow me to document your family, like you’ve never had done before.
If you have followed along with me for very long, you know that I strive to give you more than just “sit and smile” pictures. I want to capture the laughter (and yes even the tears). I want to document the missing teeth. I want to show you how beautiful your family is in it’s imperfect state. Let’s be real.. those family photos where everyone is standing just perfect and smiling perfect… that is NOT who your family is. If it is… I admire you and would love to know how you do it. For the rest of us… our lives are chaotic, frantic, stressful… but at the end of the day – it’s the little snuggles, the love you feel as your little ones crawl into your lap… these are the things that are important and have meaning. These are the things I want to remember years down the road.
So, let me introduce you to Life Inspired Sessions. We will talk in depth before your session about what makes your family awesome. We will dig into what your kids like at this exact moment in time. We will pick the perfect location, and plan fun activities and things to do together. We will customize this session JUST FOR YOUR FAMILY.
Let me tell your story with your very own Life Inspired Session.
There are some sessions that I just squeal with happiness when I leave. You might remember this beautiful little family from her maternity session last year…. let me introduce you to Duke. Seriously… he is THE cutest little boy! He was completely mesmerized by the camera and I fell madly in love with him. I’m pretty sure I could photograph them all day!
I mean seriously…. I don’t think it’s even possible to be any cuter.
Thank you so very much for choosing me to be your family photographer. I absolutely adore you!
This sweet family booked their session several weeks ago… when it was still a super hot Texas summer, but we prayed for cooler weather. I am so happy to have met this little family and be a part of telling their story.
Their little ones… holy moly. You can’t imagine the personalities from these two… unless you know them. I fell crazy in love with them and could have played in the park all day with them.
As a photographer, there are moments that we try to catch. We pride ourselves on capturing sweet moments filled with love…. and then there are some that we orchestrate. Because we know mom will love them. This one… normally is one that I would orchestrate. However, as I was photographing sweet love moments between the grownups…. I hear giggling beside me. They were standing beside me giggling about the kissing and covering their faces. Seriously…. how does that happen without me prompting them??? So I quickly told these two to run over and stand together and do the exact same thing again… perfect!!
Thank you so much Kirkpatrick Family for choosing me to be your photographer. You and your family are absolutely precious.
